Casey’s Furniture Limerick: Pre-Assembly to Speed Up Solar Installation
Casey’s Furniture Limerick: Pre-Assembly to Speed Up Solar Installation
ProSolar designed, supplied and installed a 264-panel solar PV system at Casey’s Furniture in Raheen, on the edge of Limerick City — 126.72 kWp of solar capacity across the store’s three large flat roofs, installed without a single fixing through the roof surface, and licensed to export its surplus power to the grid. The system has been operational since autumn 2024.
Ballasted East-West Arrays — No Roof Penetrations
The 264 panels were mounted on the K2 Systems D-Dome system in East and West-facing orientations at a 10-degree angle. The arrays are secured by ballast (weight) on the mounting frames rather than mechanical fixings, so the waterproofing of the flat roofs was never breached — a key consideration for any retail building. Mounting the panels across the three roofs took two weeks.
A Plant Room, Pre-Assembled in Our Warehouse
The primary electrical components — the solar inverters, the G10 relay required for ESB Networks compliance, and the main electrical distribution board — were pre-assembled as a single structure in our warehouse before ever arriving on site. On crane day, we removed a redundant backup generator from its rooftop plinth, craned the pre-built structure into its place, and repurposed the generator’s supply cable to serve the new solar system and the building’s AirTop air handling unit, which was craned up the same day along with the panels, frames and ballast. The air handling unit replacement was completed in conjunction with our sister business, RVR Energy Technology — giving the building reliable heating and cooling from heat pump technology to run alongside its new solar generation.
The result: a neat, purpose-designed rooftop installation — and an electrical fit-out finished in just five days on site.
Safety and Compliance Built In
- Individual Firefighter’s Safety Switches beside the array on each of the three roofs, on dedicated ballasted mounts, enabling rapid shutdown — compliant with SEAI grant standards
- All cabling routed in steel trunking back to the inverter location
- ESB Networks witness testing passed, as required for an installation of this scale
Grants and Grid: Handled End to End
ProSolar handled the SEAI Non-Domestic Solar PV Grant application as a registered installer — the installation qualified for €27,944 in grant funding and passed its SEAI on-site inspection. We also managed the ESB Networks NC8 application, securing an export licence: every unit of surplus electricity the system generates is exported to the grid and earns Casey’s a credit on their electricity bill.
The Numbers
- 264 panels / 126.72 kWp across three flat roofs
- €27,944 SEAI grant secured
- Operational since autumn 2024, generating approximately 105,000 units (105 MWh) per year
- Realistic expected payback of the initial investment in about 4.5 years — with grid-export credits on every surplus unit
